No trip to Inverness is complete without a trip to Inverness Castle. The present day castle has a long and calamitous history. The first castle was built on the site in the mid 12th century, but was destroyed in the Wars of Independence. The castle was re-built, but later blown up by the Jacobites to prevent it from being conquered by the English. The present day castle was built in the 1830's, and sits peacefully along the top of a cliff overlooking the River Ness. It's red sandstone exterior makes it quite a vision, and it's still in use as the home to the Sheriff Court. If you're in Inverness in the summer, try to catch the spectacular Castle Garrison display!
