If you are heading to a salon for pampering, you will only be able to completely relax and rejuvenate if you know what to expect from your visit. Any beauty treatment facility should provide a calming environment, private treatment and changing rooms, towels, and licensed staff. If you are a first time visitor, you may have difficulty choosing from the many beauty treatments on offer. A facial can be an ideal first time treatment as you are likely to be familiar with the procedure.
Alternatively, many salons offer a "sampler" package which will give you the opportunity trying a variety of beauty treatments. Some establishments offer customised packages, so that you can select favourite treatments along with something new.
When choosing the salon that is best for you, a little research goes a long way. Ask for recommendations from friends and family members, and/or perform an Internet search. Once you've narrowed down your choices, you can always call in advance to arrange an orientation tour where the staff should be happy to show you around and provide you with information about their services, facilities and treatments. Personal preference will be key to determining your preferred aesthetic environment (modern, traditional etc..), however all establishments should be clean and sanitary.
Book your appointment at least a week in advance, three weeks for busier locations. Waxing and facials are most popular in the spring and summer, so it is recommended that you book these even further in advance. Always let the receptionist know if you have any medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or are pregnant, so that the services can be adjusted accordingly.
General tips to remember before you go:
- Drink plenty of water the day you go, particularly if you are getting a massage.
- Shave a day or two before your visit, (not on the day).
- Don't eat a heavy meal the day of your visit.
- Wear comfortable clothes that are easy to change in and out of.
It is recommended clients arrive fifteen to thirty minutes prior to their scheduled appointment time. This will allow time for you to relax and adjust to the surroundings, fill out any necessary paperwork, and have a consultation with the beauty therapist prior to treatment. The consultation will give the therapist the opportunity to assess you and help you decide what treatments would be most beneficial.
Most visits will last about an hour and a half, though some package treatments may last as long a six hours (pre wedding package for example). If you enjoyed your visit the general rule for tipping is
10%-15% of the total cost of services. If you are uncertain, you may wish to ask about the tipping policy. The receptionist can clarify whether it is preferable to provide the tip in cash, or if it should be added to your bill.
Remember, communication is key. A salon's primary concern is your comfort. If you are in anyway uncomfortable during your visit do not hesitate to mention your concerns, and they should be addressed promptly and courteously. Should you need to cancel your appointment, you must advise them as soon as possible.
