Physiotherapists frequently use taping and strapping as part of their treatment of patients, either as an aid to recovery in injured areas, or as a prophylactic to prevent injury.
To date there is little independent evidence to support the efficacy of taping and strapping. As an aid to recovery it can undoubtedly provide some support around a joint, and also offers compression.
Studies that have attempted to assess the effectiveness of these techniques for injury prevention have found reduced incidence of ankle injuries among basketball players whose ankles were taped, though techniques that attempt to protect the patella tendon show no such results.
