Pool attendants are responsible for keeping a close eye on all the users of a facility. They provide first aid as required, and rescue anyone who gets into difficulties. They are also the person responsible for enforcing all poolside rules.
At many facilities the pool attendant will also be responsible for the safe and hygienic operation of the pool, including monitoring the levels of chemicals, heating and filtration, and overseeing routine maintenance of the pumps and equipment. Employers should, of course provide training in these tasks.
Where the pool is part of larger fitness complex, it's quite common for the pool attendant's role to be combined with "dryside" activities, such as gym supervision.
To qualify for this job you must be a strong swimmer with a good level of physical fitness, and certification will require specific tests to verify this. It is also essential that you hold a recognized life saving certification.
Although local authorities run many pools, there are increasingly opportunities to work with private companies, including health clubs, hotels and holiday centres.
Salaries for full-time employees would be in the region of ?10,000 - ?14,000 per year. For more information on jobs, training, and certification, contact the following:
